Audio Log - 1506SK "Slip"

<record>

I felt…useless. On the floor, among the Engineer’s menagerie of droid minions, I couldn’t have felt further from my brothers. I thought I could deactivate the reactor and stop what could only become the madness of an overwhelming wave of droids and other traps. I saw the control station and I went for it. Damaged….inoperable. I looked up in time to realize I was now separated from Softball and Roger by a small army of droids and a giant tank like creation. I had no idea where Fingers had disappeared to, but I could only assume he’d snapped a line across the pit to find the Engineer.

Then I was floating. Blindsided then lifted off the ground by a giant pincer I already knew where I would be dropped. Useless…I was a burden to my brothers. The worst part was they were so overwhelmed by numbers that they didn’t even know I was in trouble. They held their own, Roger dodged the giant droid several times, but could they win out if I wasn’t there to patch them up? I did the only thing I could do. I grabbed my cutting torch and began to sever the hydraulics of the beast carrying me to my death. First one side…so close to the pit…then the other and slipped from it’s clutches just short of what looked to be a bottomless fall.

As I regained my bearings and realized the reactor was just seconds from engulfing the entire area I heard Fingers over the headset ordering the Engineer to shut down. I don’t know what followed, but soon, thankfully, the reactor powered down as did the droids.

Fingers and I had differing reactions to the Engineer. I think he considers her a threat, plain and simple, but I see her as a victim. A zealot created by the situation and the proper propaganda. She believed we would take her creation and use it to essentially help destroy worlds. That’s not who we are. At least, I believe the Republic is more than that. There has to be a higher purpose to these actions. Doesn’t there? Regardless, I could see looking at her might be like looking into a mirror. Is that what I would say if I was aboard a ship taken over by separatists? Could I possibly believe they had any other intention? I ponder.

Softball called me “Slip” first. He claims I was simply too slippery to get a good grip on, absolutely refusing to acknowledge any ingenuity I may have used to escape. But that’s his way. I’ve had enough of his blood on my hands to know the name isn’t an insult. Roger likes the name because he felt my fall was somewhat less than graceful. That is much closer to the truth I think. So here I am…“Slip”.

I’m happy for Captain Therin. She’s a strong officer and deserves no less. I look forward to doing her proud in the future. As to these new Jedi officers, I can only wait and see. I follow orders of course and I hope their ideals fall somewhat in line with my own. I know what I’ve heard from brothers among the fleet about the Jedi, but actions will speak louder. I follow, but I also watch.

I have asked for permission to see the Engineer before we are shipped out. I wish to see if we can work on a project together. “Build a bridge”, a metaphor I read about in some book during training. Perhaps we can find common ground rebuilding Q-Bit. Perhaps my short metallic friend will be all the smarter and stronger with her guidance over my basic droid programming/building skills. I hope I’m given the chance to try.

Trooper 1506…uhhh…Slip…out.

Journal Entry, Trooper 0369CF.
Our War

I’ve been reflecting on the events that recently took place in our war. It is our war. Despite the many others involved: generals, legions of clones, droids, separatists, senators, and loyalists… to me it is my personal war and the war of my closest comrades. I only have a limited perspective, my own view is clear, and I can see things some things from the perspective of the others: Softball, the Medic, Roger, Captain Therin… it is only that which makes up my world.

We were assigned to be one head of a two-headed strike on a piece of valuable war resource. It is imperative that I not commit the details of the resource or its utility to our cause to this journal in case it falls into enemy hands, however, writing this helps me to come to terms with the fact that our action constitutes a critical contribution to the Republic war effort. We have deprived the separatist scum of materiel and provided it in abundance to our fellows.

Ours proved to be the weaker of the two assault teams. As I mentioned, it was a two-headed strike… one was headed by a general, a Jedi of great renown, Kenobi. His team made quick work of his objective, as difficult as our own, and he saw fit to chide us for that. Kenobi had the Force on his side in addition to more senior clone troopers. How can a man of (professed) modesty see fit to berate us like that in a time of pitched battle? I lose respect for the Jedi by the day.

So, as Kenobi chided us, I became emboldened. I would not sit back with my fellows and take a cautious route to victory. I would use whatever means necessary, be they just or unjust, to persuade, beguile, overthrow or kill any intermediate obstacles. I have always been fond of the blades. They are weapons of silent efficiency. They do not require blaster packs. They are precise. They are concealable. And, as I learned today, they make very effective implements of intimidation.

I think it must come from incomplete training that I missed something about the weapons. Cutting only dummies or targets I gained appreciation only for the reliability, the silence. I liked that it required extra skill to wield effectively but that it would never jam, never be exhausted, never fail me. Instead only I could fail it. I worked hard to avoid that possibility, and that spurred my progress. However, now long off Kamino and in the field, I see more clearly that the weapon also has a passion.. a violence.

I could see it in the eyes of those Neimoidian toadies. Those contemptible creatures who finally did relinquish us the bridge. I must not say too much about our mission. Regardless, even though they succumbed only to the pain I promised, the truth is that I would have cut them. If they’d refused, they would have bled on the floor. I knew then that this was very different than training exercises, and that these were not like droids. I find I actually enjoy the thought of cutting the flesh of an enemy… it would feel, I think, better than blasting a droid… or a training dummy. I know it is separatist leadership like these Neimoidian stooges that are the real targets, the effective targets, the live targets. I guess you could call my feeling a bloodlust. I think it’s just knowing what I was trained for and seeking it out. For me. For us. For our war.

Bloodlust. I would once have thought that an ugly word. To be dispassionate would be better, or so I thought. But remember the hybrid… my brother’s life stolen to make an abomination whose details I will not elaborate upon… but that creature ignited in me a spark of vengeance and anger that did not dissipate. Perhaps it grew over time. Perhaps the Neimoidians’ cowardice nurtured it. Perhaps it is the strength I can harness to surprise the likes of Kenobi… or of the Sergeant Major.

After that first success, my resolve was steel and my mind opened to the possibility of my opportunity to excel. Though a unit, we are a unit made of individuals. Individuals cut from the same cloth, but destined for our own particular roles. I saw my life then as expendable, my mission as that of the van. To lead from the front, and plow into the enemy before they had a chance to respond or react, the commando’s role. That is why after contemptible Kenobi chided us again, I ran to the fore and launched myself at the Engineer. The assault and acrobatics instructors would be proud of my ascension. My newly acquired powerful blaster surprised even me as I vaporized the barrier. However, the engineer would not be cowed by threat. Instead, she seemed resolved to die, even horribly, rather than relinquish her post. I stunned her… but I wanted to cut her.

The rest is chance and happenstance. I should have waited for Medic or Softball to slice the terminal, but my mind was awash in a fever of action, of purpose. I was truly surprised when it worked. When Kenobi finally grudgingly acquiesced some credit for our success it was bitter for me. At least now I have a glimpse of my purpose… not just for the Republic. For us. This is our war. Not the Jedi or the droids, or the Trade Federation or anyone else.
On to better things now I suppose. With our captain granted a ship of dubious combat worthiness I have doubt whether we will be the hammer or the sword. No, instead we will be a surgical thing. Gently applied but precise and effective. I received an unexpected promotion to sergeant. I will lead my small group, try to instill them with the same purpose I saw in that last battle. Try to keep them alive, and maximally effective. Make them the surgical tool our captain needs, our Generals will note, and our war requires.

It is a calling I answer.
I will point the way; I will hold the knife.

To Save a Jedi

<<record>>

Trooper Medic 1506SK recording status on board the Black Ice. We successfully penetrated the hull with little more than a few bumps and bruises. The boarding vessel worked as intended and our team began to move into the ship. Softball and Fingers kept us moving quickly and made quick work of each droid group we came across. Softball in particular used his grenades to amazing advantage and we barely had to fire a shot as we made our way to the bridge.

When we came upon a blast door that was simply not passable I found came across some kind of vent in the wall. It ended up being an entry into the venting system for that part of the ship. The proved to be a huge find as Fingers was able to scout much of our area and even locate the astrogation room, letting us now the bridge was near! With a little help from a re-purposed and modified dinner cart from a kitchen we moved Qbit through the duct system and all staged ourselves outside the hallway leading to the bridge. Softball once again was the hero taking down an entire security team of droids with a single grenade, eliminating the need for a drawn out and time wasting fire fight.

Qbit was able to hack the bridge security door where we found two Neimoidian deck officers, but they put up little resistance. We brought General Kenobi up on the screen just in time to see the life support disabled in his part of the ship. We needed to move fast! Already intimidated by a strike team of clone troopers on their their bridge the Neimoidians told us this was probably the work of “The Engineer”, we even managed to get her location from them before we restrained them in order to keep them from being any additional threat.

We’ve arrived into The Engineer’s chamber. She has rerouted systems for General Kenobi’s quadrant to her console. His life is in our hands. WE need to act fast and…

By the creator… she was waiting for us. There are droids everywhere, I’ve never seen any like this before! Fingers sees The Engineer high up on a dais across a pit…a pit??

Fingers! An ascension gun?!?

Does anyone hear treads? …oh no…

Mimban is a swampy pit.

<< RECORD >>

I just heard the medic, 1506SK, recording an audio log. Between the parasitic leeches, and our general lack of equipment on this place I have forgotten to record a log at regular intervals as is specified in the manual. In the manual. None of this was in the manual. F*ck the manual.

Never thought I’d say that. But, when you add up the T-series droids, the massive battle droids, and the subjugated populace on this forsaken swampy hell-hole, you can see where I’m coming from. You can, can’t you? It’s not in the manual. That’s all I have to say.

<< END RECORDING >>

<< RECORD >>

He’s recording again. I feel delinquent having recorded so little in comparison. Maybe part of me still does want to go by the book. All I know is we have captured a T-droid, we avoided fighting some kind of huge tank droid thing, and we’re about to take off on speeder bikes. So, it could be worse. Why did I say that!

This is Trooper Medic 1506SK. The rest of the unit moved on to security and has not yet returned. Shaft and I finished downloading all intelligence and worked our way over to cybernetics. What we’ve found is…bad. Bad enough that I tore the lab apart looking for a recorder of any type to take down what I’ve found. Apparently this lab is run by a Doctor Lara Mavin. We will need to investigate who this woman is. I have found three locals, at least that’s what they were. They are still alive in varying degrees of health, however they have all been altered. Metal has replaced flesh in different ways on each one. Limb replacement as a medical procedure is one thing, this is monstrous and cruel. I’ve managed to stabilize all three, but one cannot be moved without assistance. In fact, moving him may kill him ultimately. However, if we leave him, his fate will b worse. We’re going to move out and find the rest of Aegis.

A mess. That’s what we’re in. Aegis Squad minus myself secured a prisoner, but he was able to escape. Roger went in pursuit and resorted to deadly force in the end. Whatever that security tech knew died with him. Must remind the Lieutenant to educate Roger on the stun setting of energy weapons.
<< PAUSE >>
We found what looked like prisoners, but they’re not. They have dead eyes…as if a corpse were walking. I believe these to be more droids shrouded in humanoid skin. But to what end? How many of the locals in the village now are simply wolves in sheep’s clothing? Can we trust any of them? Shaft and I were able to deactivate the droids before they became a problem, but…*(Voice of Softball) DROIDEKAS! WE NEED TO MOVE OUT NOW!* Bloody Hell..

Episode 3.5: The Secret Lab

On the remote swamp world of Mimban, The Clone Troopers of AEGIS SQUAD have discovered a secret Separatist research station.

Disguising themselves as the local Mirialan inhabitants, they have infiltrated the Neimoidian laboratory.

They have incapacitated one of the enemy droids and accessed its memory core…

Softball: “All right, smash and grab a little north.”
Medic: “Great work, Q-bit.”
QB8: <whistle-chirping> “QB8 = useful = happy!”
Medic: “Why don’t we let Q-bit lead the way and try to keep up the act a little longer?”
Softball: “That works. Let’s steal that intel and get out of here.”
Roger: “Dirty deeds done dirt cheap. I guess I’ll take point.”
Softball: “Whatever. Fingers and I can cover the rear. Wait, where’s Fingers?”
Roger: “There he goes again on his own… goin’ down the only road he’s ever known.”
Medic: “I’ve got a bad feeling about this…”

Episode 3: Swamped

The Clone Troopers of AEGIS SQUAD have successfully completed their training and have been assigned to their new unit.

Lieutenant LAYNA THERIN, a Bothan intelligence officer, has determined that the Infiltrator Droid’s point of origin was the primitive swamp planet of Mimban.

Impressed by AEGIS SQUAD’S valor, skill, and resourcefulness, command has dispatched the troopers to Mimban to gather intelligence from the depths of the swamp…

Softball: “LZ secure.”
Lt. Therin: “Be vigilant, men. There’s no way to know what we’ll find in this swamp, but you can bet it won’t be friendly.”
Fingers: “Yes, mam! This trooper is on alert.”
Medic: “And try not to touch your mouth or face, there’s no telling what you’ll catch.”
Roger: “Like hysteria, or pyromania, or cat-scratch fever?”
Medic: “Don’t be paranoid.”
Fingers: “Copy. Avoid contact with microbes, parasites, and mental disorders.”
Softball: <patting> “Good. I prefer contact with inorganics.”
QB8: <whistle-grunting> “Terrain = interference > 42%: north heading = large power source.”
Lt. Therin: “0369CF, take the point. Squad, fan out. Watch for mines and traps.
Fingers: “With pleasure, mam! 0369CF moving out.”

"Fingers" Log, Episode 2: Shore Leave
Hard booze and easy women.

There will not be an official version of this, let me tell you. We arrived at Velmor two days ago but it seems like a week. Being back on Camino seems… like a year ago. Lots of new things all at once will do that to you, I guess.

It’s a week of firsts for sure. Our “official” graduation, our induction into some sort of special operations division… intelligence I guess. Well, those are are big events. The capstone of our education, which didn’t go exactly as planned… maybe I should start there.

“Sev”. He’s an old dog. An early clone, who taught me and “Roger” the art of stealth. Together we hatched a plan to get one over on him. We rigged (with the help of a source I won’t reveal) some white noise to come on over the PA to hide our movements and struck while he was supposed to be sleeping. I went for his badges but ended up with some kind of knick-knacks… point is they were personal effects so I thought it was good enough. We meant to surprise him privately the next parade, or after it, but when I woke up the next morning “Sev” was standing over my bed with that bag in his hand. Krike. He’s a salty one… I mean, he had some lecture for me about by-the-book and how I needed to expand beyond the book, but you know… that’s why they write the damned book!

I played it off… I think he was proud of me for trying. I hope he’ll keep his word… I hope he’ll salute at my funeral if it comes to that.

Then it was interrogations by Doctor Marka. I don’t know who she thought she was interviewing but I’m not going to talk about classified materials with just some schmuck without authorization. She wanted to know about my blasted feelings… well, she can shove it. Damn right we’re pissed off. Damn right we want to blow whatever Seppie bantha-fodder-sucking [cursing] are behind this… but there are proper channels, and she had better be right with my respect for those channels. Now, I know this’ll probably come off like I’m railing at her ‘cause my feelings are hurt, but I got enough sense to know when I’m pissed and what for. So, if she means to dock me for not wanting to share, she can dock me. Well, I gave her a line about how I’m all broken up, told the truth, and then spit. You know where that got me.

Velmor. Not much to speak of really. Farms and what not. The orbital base though is definitely different than what we saw on Camino. Ever carry around a hammer all your life and never see a nail? Well, I got an 8 inch hammer that just saw a female Twi’lek for the first time. [Laughing]. Yeah… so… girls are something I wasn’t prepared for. Gotta admit. But I kept my cool. I’d like to find one I can keep. I don’t like rentals.

Food was good. Worth every credit. I started mouthing off about how we gotta toe the line even though we’re on leave. To keep our traps shut about the mission and stuff. About then is when “Softball” started doing deathsticks and ordered me a strong drink. I don’t remember much after that. I’m sure I was just over-reacting.

Episode 2 "Shore Leave"

Episode 2: “Shore” Leave

The Clone Troopers of AEGIS SQUAD have recovered from their injuries sustained during the ambush on their training mission.

Command has dispatched the squad to JADEN’S JETSAM Space Station in the Mid-Rim region of the galaxy.

The Clones have no experience of the galaxy beyond their watery, military home on KAMINO…

Softball: “This does NOT look secure.”
Fingers: “Affirmative. Probability of infection, intoxication, and incarceration are high. .”
Roger: “That means sex, drugs, and rock ‘n’ roll, baby!”
Medic: “I can fix most of the first two…”

Episode 2 Wrap-up

Some Player Character Highlights:
• 0369CF “Fingers” tried to out-sneak the commando/sniper trainer, RC-1107 “Sev.” It went as planned, but didn’t work. At Jaden’s Jetsam he invented the orange-colored drink “Soulless Station.” He also chipped in for the squad dinner at Kirshner’s, a “chop” restaurant offering very exotic food.
• 0580YW has picked up the group’s communications role, and the nickname “Switch.” (“It’s a double entendre, guys! Get it? Like a switch board. But I also switched combat roles. Why is no one else smiling? Oh, go screw!”)
• 0650RD “Red” has no idea where he is, doesn’t care, and drinks: so he’s in cell number 3.
• 1506SK bought a droid program from an Ugnaught named Wree-ek in the commerce module. He also managed to abstain from all drinking and chipped in for the squad dinner at Kirshner’s.
• 5433AB “Roger” won 300 credits playing a game of marksmanship. He promptly lost much of it with a green Twi’lek dancer.
• 6712SS “Softball” started a large party on their first night in. The theme: girls, girls, girls. And there was drinking, and death sticks, and the red-head on the second night, and more death sticks.

Some New Characters:

  • Chief Warrant Officer RC1107 “Sev”
    Clone commando
Sniper and infiltration instructor at Kamino
“If you can sneak up on me, great. If not, I’ll salute at your funeral.”
  • Lieutenant Eelin Marka
    Human medical officer
    Medicine training instructor at Kamino

  • “Angie”
    Human escort?
    Red-head
    “Tell me about yourself, honey.”
  • Wree-ek
    Ugnaught droid programmer
    “Wrrng nugg brrgnn?”

Some New Places

  • Velmor System
An isolated world inhabited by humans and many alien species
Has varied climate and terrain similar to Earth
Aligned with neither Republic nor CIS
Produces many goods, chief export is food
  • Jaden’s Jetsam
A medium space station near Velmor in the mid-rim
Its location makes it ideal for trade, espionage, and all kinds of underworld activities
  • Kirshner’s Restaurant
A “chop” restaurant on Jaden’s Jetsam
  • Club Trilogy
A night club on Jaden’s Jetsam

Ending Cash:

  • 0369CF: $675
  • 1506SK: $55
  • 5433AB: $705
  • 6712SS: $325
